Hiking Mount Baldhead to Oval Beach: Saugatuck's Most Rewarding Hike
There are easier ways to get to Oval Beach, but none of them earn the view quite like climbing Mount Baldhead.
The hike is short, about a mile round trip, but those 303 steps up a steep wooden staircase make it feel much longer. People underestimate it. You'll see many visitors pause halfway up, catch their breath on one of the small benches built into the climb, and keep going. By the time you reach the top, you'll feel it.
The payoff comes at the observation deck at the summit. Looking east through a gap in the trees, you can see Saugatuck and Lake Kalamazoo below. The view opens up even more in winter and spring when the tree cover thins. To the west, the old radar tower from the Cold War era still stands, and on clearer days earlier in the year, you may catch a glimpse of Lake Michigan in the distance
The Climb Up Mount Baldhead
Mount Baldhead sits just outside downtown Saugatuck, so it’s easy to add to your itinerary, whether you're early risers or prefer to venture out in the afternoon. The trailhead is near the Chain Ferry landing, with free gravel parking and restrooms available at the base. From there, it’s a straight shot up. The wooden steps are well maintained, but they’re relentless. There’s no gradual warm-up; you're climbing from the first step.
At the top, a wooden observation deck gives you a different perspective of the area. To the east, you’ll get a bird’s-eye view of Saugatuck and Lake Kalamazoo, often visible through the trees in summer and fall. To the west, you’ll see the radar tower, and in the off-season, when the leaves are down, you may catch a glimpse of Lake Michigan in the distance.
From here, you can take the staircase back down the way you came, or (our recommendation) follow the sandy trail down the western slope of the dune, which leads toward Oval Beach.
Oval Beach: The Perfect Reward
Oval Beach is one of the best beaches in Michigan, and approaching it from Mount Baldhead gives you a different perspective than driving in from the main parking lot. The beach is wide, the sand is clean, and Lake Michigan feels even bigger when you walk up to it from the dunes.
If you're staying at Hotel Saugatuck, consider adding our Lake Day Package to your reservation. It includes everything you need for the beach: two Sand Cloud organic Turkish cotton towels, a net beach bag, a small cooler for drinks and snacks, and premium sunscreen and SPF lip balm. All of it is yours to keep, which means one less thing to think about before you head out.
The water is cold, even in summer, but after the climb, you’ll welcome it. Bring a picnic and spend a few hours on the beach before heading back, walk the shoreline, explore the dunes, or just sit and watch the waves. There's no wrong way to do it.
The Hike Back
To return, you have a few options depending on how you want to plan your day.
You can retrace your steps, hiking back up the dune from the beach to the observation deck before heading down the stairs to your car. Keep in mind that hiking up soft sand is more challenging than coming down, and it can take a bit more effort than expected.
If you’d rather avoid the return climb, you can plan ahead. During the warmer months, the Saugatuck Chain Ferry runs between Saugatuck and Douglas across the Kalamazoo River.
Another option is the Saugatuck Interurban, a demand-response public bus that can pick you up near Oval Beach and take you back into town or to your car. It’s a convenient choice if you want to keep the hike one-way.
Best Time to Hike Mount Baldhead
The best time to do this hike is between June and September, when the weather is warm enough to swim, and the beach is at its best. Early morning is ideal if you want to avoid crowds, especially on summer weekends when the beach fills up quickly. Late afternoon works well too, particularly if you want to catch the light changing over the water.
Fall is another great time to visit. As the leaves change, the views from the top of Mount Baldhead take on a completely different feel, with warm colors stretching across the surrounding forest and river.
The entire loop takes about 40 minutes at a steady pace, but most people take longer. There's no reason to rush it. The benches on the way up are there for a reason, and the view from the top is worth sitting with for a few minutes.
What Makes Mount Baldhead Special
Mount Baldhead has been a Saugatuck landmark for generations. The dune rises about 250 feet, and long before the staircase was built, people climbed straight up the sand. The observation deck at the top was added later, and it's become a must-see for anyone visiting Saugatuck. You'll see families with kids, couples on weekend trips, and solo hikers all making the climb. It's challenging enough to feel like an accomplishment, but short enough that it doesn't take over your whole day. That balance is part of what makes it popular.
Plan Your Visit to Mount Baldhead Park and Oval Beach
If you're staying at Hotel Saugatuck, Mount Baldhead Park is about a 6-minute drive. You can make it a morning activity before the beach gets crowded, or an afternoon outing before dinner. Either way, those hydrotherapy tubs back at the hotel are going to feel especially good after a day that includes 303 steps and soft sand.
For a short hike, Mount Baldhead delivers more than you'd expect. The climb is harder than it looks, the view is better than most people anticipate, and the beach at the end ties it all together.
Book your stay and plan a day that balances effort and reward. The stairs, the view, the beach, and a place to come back to that feels like a true retreat.
