Summer Sounds of Saugatuck: Restaurants, Wineries & Outdoor Concerts
Summer evenings in Saugatuck tend to have a soundtrack. Walk through downtown on any given night, and you’ll hear music drifting out of restaurants, patios, and bars.
If you’re visiting between late spring and early fall, there’s a good chance you’ll stumble into something, but if you’d rather plan ahead, here’s where to find live music in and around Saugatuck, from free outdoor concerts to intimate performances and everything in between.
Free Outdoor Concerts
Some of the best live music in the area is free and outdoors. All you need is a blanket or a lawn chair, and no other plans.
Music in the Park
Every Wednesday at Wicks Park, from mid-June through late August, local and regional bands play from 7 to 9 p.m. in the gazebo along the Kalamazoo River. People start arriving early with picnic baskets and coolers, claiming spots along the riverbank. It’s relaxed, family-friendly in the sense that everyone’s welcome, and one of the easiest ways to spend a summer evening in town.
Felt Estate Summer Concert Series
The Felt Estate’s Summer concert series runs for four Thursdays in July, with performances on the lawn of the historic Felt Mansion. The music starts at 7 p.m., but the grounds open at 6 p.m. with food and drinks available for purchase. The mansion provides the backdrop, the sunset does the rest.
Music in the Vineyards
Fenn Valley Vineyards brings live music to the tasting room patio on Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m. throughout the summer and into fall. The vineyard is about 15 minutes from Saugatuck, and the combination of wine, music, and open air is just what a summer evening should be. Bring a blanket or grab a seat at one of the picnic tables.
Fennville City Music Hall Series
About 15 minutes from Saugatuck, the small town of Fennville hosts its own summer concert series on Thursday evenings in July and August. The City Music Hall Series draws volunteer artists from all over the world to play on an outdoor stage in the middle of town. Bring a lawn chair, grab a drink from Fennville's Social District, and settle in for the evening.
Ticketed Performances
Chamber Music Festival of Saugatuck
If your idea of live music leans more toward classical, check the lineup for the Chamber Music Festival of Saugatuck. The festival has been running since 1987, with traditional and contemporary chamber music performed by some of the best local and national professional musicians. Concerts are held Thursday and Friday evenings in July and August at the historic Saugatuck Woman’s Club on Butler Street. The venue seats about 125 people, and each concert is followed by a reception where you can meet the musicians. Make sure to purchase your tickets in advance!
Saugatuck Center for the Arts
The Saugatuck Center for the Arts runs year-round programming that goes well beyond what you'd expect in a town this size. Summer brings professional theater productions with actors from New York and Chicago. The Second City comedy troupe makes an annual appearance. Tribute bands and touring musicians fill the concert calendar. Throughout the year, there are also film screenings, art exhibitions, and educational classes.
Saugatuck Restaurants and Bars with Live Music
Beyond the scheduled concerts, you’ll find local acts performing at Saugatuck restaurants and bars throughout town on a regular basis. Some have set schedules, others book bands as they come.
For a relaxed evening with a cocktail in hand, The Butler and Wicks Park Bar & Grille both have outdoor tables with views of the river. Wicks Park hosts live music on Friday and Saturday nights, plus trivia on Thursdays. Borrowed Time keeps things quieter, with acoustic sets that pair well with their seasonal small plates.
Those looking for a livelier scene will find it at Coral Gables, which is really a whole entertainment complex on the water. Every weekend in the summer, the Corner Bar hosts karaoke nights, the Piano Bar features live piano performances, the Crow Bar welcomes local DJs, and Cowboys brings Nashville energy with line dancing and country music. You’ll also find bands and solo acts performing every Thursday through Saturday at the Tiki Bar, an open-air stage with views of the Kalamazoo River.
Wally's Bar & Grill and the Sand Bar Saloon are local favorites for late-night music on Saturdays, usually running past midnight. Red Dock is another popular spot. With live music right on the water, it tends to draw a crowd for sunset and keeps that energy going into the evening when bands are playing. Pumpernickel's brings a more modern, upbeat vibe to Butler Street, with craft cocktails and live music throughout the season. If you’d rather sip locally made craft beer while you listen, head to the Barrel Room at Saugatuck Brewing Company. They host live music every Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Hotel Saugatuck as Your Base
One of our favorite things about Saugatuck is how easy it is to wander into live music without planning for it. You can head downtown for dinner, hear something you like coming from a patio, and end up staying longer than you expected.
And while the town of Saugatuck hums with energy, our Adults Only Boutique Hotel remains a quiet sanctuary. Quiet suites, nightly dessert, and no noise from the neighbors. You can enjoy everything the town has to offer and still get a good night’s sleep.
Plan your summer visit and check the Saugatuck event calendar to see what’s happening during your stay.
