Snow in Saugatuck, MI: A Winter Hike in Snowshoes
Michigan’s natural landscapes make it one of the most unique states in the country, and its wildlife and endless forests make it a gem in the Midwest. In Holland, a fifteen minute drive north of Saugatuck, the Outdoor Discovery Center Macatawa Greenway (ODCMG) is a nonprofit organization leading the way of conservation and education about the natural world in Michigan. And even in winter, the land around the Center is full of life.
For those seeking a breath of fresh, crisp winter air or a natural experience for the environmental aficionado, the Outdoor Discovery Center offers five miles of trails that are open dawn to dusk and a small $5 rental fee for Ojibwa snowshoes. Explore Saugatuck’s landscapes blanketed in the untouched coat of fresh snow (you’ll need more than four inches to rent the snowshoes) and have a Saugatuck experience that the summer visitors never get to see.
On January 14th, you can snowshoe with a naturalist for an hour and a half in search of winter wildlife. The charge is still $5 and you may learn something about the season, notoriously stereotyped with stifling the vibrant green life of spring and summer that you never knew before.
Visit ODCMG’s website to read about their mission, and click Plan Your Visit to make sure you don’t miss a thing this winter.
