Tour a Frank Lloyd Wright House in Grand Rapids
Located in the Heritage Hill Historic District of Grand Rapids, the Meyer May House stands exactly as it's architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, intended it. From the landscaping to the linens, the Meyer May House has been masterfully and painstakingly restored down to the most minute details, including period correct furnishings. The property offers visitors a rare opportunity to tour the most perfectly preserved of Frank Lloyd Wright’s prairie houses.
Custom-designed for Meyer May, who was only 5’4”, the house is proportioned to him and features the low, wide spaces, gently sloping roofs, and horizontal lines that are characteristic of Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs. As you tour the house, admire the breathtaking leaded glass windows and skylights that filter sunlight through iridescent panes, providing muted lighting that carries a sense of tranquility throughout the entire building.
In the heart of the Heritage Hill Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Meyer May House was seen as something very strange and odd when it was built. Surrounded by Victorian homes in more traditional styles like Queen Anne, Italianate, and Colonial and Greek Revival, the sleek lines and wide, low roofs of the Meyer May House must have been far ahead of its time. It’s no wonder it’s considered a masterpiece of Michigan’s Prairie School architecture.
Tours of the Meyer May House are offered Sundays from 1-4PM and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10AM-1PM.
