Fall in Saugatuck: A 2-Day Itinerary & Local Guide
There's something special about fall along Michigan's lakeshore. The mornings are a little cooler, the trees begin to turn, and the slower pace makes it easier to enjoy everything that makes Saugatuck and Douglas so special.
While summer tends to steal the spotlight, fall is one of our favorite times of year. From quiet walks along Lake Michigan to apple orchards, roadside farmstands and afternoons spent wandering downtown, there's no shortage of ways to embrace the season.
We've put together two of our favorite fall days, combining the places everyone should experience with a few local gems you might otherwise miss.
Day One: Fall Colors, Lake Michigan & the Art Coast
Morning | Coffee and a walk through the dunes
Start your morning with a leisurely breakfast at Hotel Saugatuck before heading out to explore.
Our first recommendation is Saugatuck Dunes State Park, where wooded trails wind through the dunes and eventually open onto the shores of Lake Michigan. The walk to the beach is beautiful in any season, but there's something particularly special about making your way through the colorful fall canopy before emerging onto a quiet stretch of shoreline.
For a shorter adventure with a beautiful view,
Mount Baldhead Park is another favorite. Climb the 303 steps to the observation deck for a different perspective of Saugatuck and the surrounding fall colors.
Afternoon | Lunch, shopping and a little Art Coast inspiration
After your morning outdoors, head downtown for lunch and an afternoon exploring Saugatuck and Douglas.
Fall is a wonderful time to browse the independent boutiques, pop into an art gallery or discover a little something to bring home.
Don't overlook Douglas! Just down the road from Saugatuck, you'll find another charming downtown with its own collection of shops, galleries and local favorites.
Stop for an afternoon coffee at Respite Cappuccino Court and enjoy a little time without an agenda.
Evening | Sunset at Oval Beach
Before dinner, make your way to Oval Beach.
The beach takes on an entirely different personality in the fall. The shoreline is quieter, the air is crisp, and there's plenty of room to enjoy one of Lake Michigan's beautiful sunsets.
Parking is complimentary after Labor Day, making an evening visit even easier.
Finish the day with dinner at one of Saugatuck or Douglas's local restaurants before returning to the comfort of your suite.
Day Two: A Fall Day in the Fennville Countryside
Morning | Coffee, country roads and farmstands
Today, we're taking you a little farther off the beaten path.
Just south of Saugatuck, Fennville is home to some of our favorite seasonal experiences. Think colorful country roads, roadside farmstands, apple orchards and local wineries.
Start with a coffee from Respite in Douglas before taking the scenic drive into the countryside.
If you're visiting on a Friday or Saturday, make Stable Side Farmstand one of your first stops. This charming roadside stand is a favorite for fresh bread, baked goods and some seriously impressive cinnamon rolls. Get there early, as the good stuff tends to go quickly.
From there, stop at Dee's Lakeshore Farm for seasonal produce and other locally grown finds.
Midday | Apple picking and a proper fall lunch
No Michigan fall getaway is complete without a little time at an apple orchard.
Head to Crane Orchards, where you can pick your own apples during harvest season and enjoy the beautiful countryside.
When you're ready for lunch, make the short trip to Crane's Pie Pantry. A longtime local favorite, Crane's is the kind of place that feels like fall. Our recommendation? Order the loaded sloppy Joe and make sure you save room for pie.
Take a little something home from the bakery, too. You'll thank us later.
Afternoon | A little Michigan wine country
Spend the afternoon exploring Fennville's wineries.
Michigan Wine Co., Modales and Fenn Valley are all wonderful options for enjoying a tasting and discovering the wines produced right here in Southwest Michigan.
Choose one, settle in and enjoy the afternoon. There's no need to rush from place to place.
Evening | The scenic route home
As you make your way back toward Saugatuck, take the scenic route through the countryside.
If the timing is right, head toward Pier Cove or return to Oval Beach for one last glimpse of Lake Michigan before the sun goes down.
It's the perfect ending to a fall weekend spent exploring Michigan's lakeshore.
Your Fall Getaway Awaits
The beauty of fall in Saugatuck is that there's no need to fill every moment. Sometimes the best part of a getaway is taking the long way around, discovering somewhere unexpected or simply enjoying a little time together.
Whether you're here for the fall colors, the harvest season or a quiet weekend away, we hope this guide inspires you to experience a little more of the place we're lucky enough to call home.
We look forward to welcoming you to Hotel Saugatuck.
Please note: Farmstands, orchards and some local businesses operate seasonally. We recommend checking their current hours and availability before heading out.
